Monthly roundup // FINRA short interest, settlements 2026-01-15 and 2026-01-30

Short interest in January 2026

At the January 30, 2026 settlement, FINRA’s file listed 21,375 securities with 48.07 billion shares held short, +2.5% against the December 31, 2025 month end. The largest single position among exchange-listed names was PLUG at 348.4M shares. This is the measured record of one month, not a list of ideas: nothing here says what anyone should do with a security.

What this page reads. Our stored copy of FINRA’s consolidated short interest files for the settlements 2025-12-31 (21,202 rows), 2026-01-15 (21,264 rows) and 2026-01-30 (21,375 rows). The tables use the month-end settlement, 2026-01-30, and measure change against 2025-12-31. Read from the store 2026-11-03; short interest is published about seven business days after each settlement.

Largest short positions at 2026-01-30

By shares held short, among the 6,058 securities in the file with average daily volume of at least 100,000 shares that are not known to trade OTC (1,454 OTC rows left out). Shares, not percent of float: FINRA publishes no float, and a large company carries a large position.

How to read a month of short interest

A short position is a count of borrowed shares sold and not yet bought back, reported by brokers twice a month. A large count can be a hedge against a convertible bond, an index arbitrage leg or a pair trade, so the tables show size and change, never intent. Days to cover says how many average sessions of volume the position equals; it is a ratio, not a forecast of a squeeze.

The change tables compare share counts, so a corporate action moves them as surely as trading does. A reverse split shrinks a position without anyone buying shares back, and a spin-off or merger can add one overnight. Before reading a large change as a decision by short sellers, check the company’s filings for the same weeks.

Names and venues come from the FINRA rows themselves. Rows stored before August 2026 carry neither, so they are read from the newest stored row for the same symbol; where no such row exists the table says the venue is not recorded instead of guessing it.

FINRA is the owner and source of this short interest and short sale volume data. Free on every plan; not for redistribution.
