Commitments of Traders

These are its figures for the futures that frame US stocks and macro: the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100 and Russell 2000 E-minis, VIX, the 10-year Treasury note, gold and crude oil. Positions are counted in contracts, as of a Tuesday, and the CFTC releases them the Friday after.

Reading the groups

Financial futures use the CFTC's Traders in Financial Futures report: dealers are the banks and brokers on the other side of client trades, asset managers include pension funds, insurers and mutual funds, and leveraged funds are hedge funds and other money managers. Gold and crude use the Disaggregated report, where producers and users hedge their own business, swap dealers hedge swaps they wrote, and managed money is funds trading for clients. Spread is a trader's long and short held together in the same market, counted once on each side. Nonreportable is everyone under the CFTC's reporting size. In every group the longs and spreads, with the small traders, add up to open interest; a contract whose figures do not is withheld.

A group's net position says what it held, not what it expects: a dealer's short can be the hedge of a client's long, and a producer's short is often next year's crop or output. These are positions reported to a regulator, not a forecast or a recommendation.
